McConnell: Debt Makes America Look Like Western Europe, Where Spending Cuts Sparked Recessions | ThinkProgress

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) reiterated Sunday that the automatic budget cuts that began taking effect March 1 were “modest” cuts that would keep the United States from turning into the Western European countries that have spent the last four years battling high unemployment and repeat recessions.
“We have a $16 trillion national debt,” McConnell said. “Our debt is as big as our economy. That alone makes us look like a Western European country.”
European unemployment hit a new record last week, and the Eurozone re-entered recession in November. Spain and Greece both have unemployment rates above 25 percent, and even Germany, the continent’s stalwart economy, is now contracting. Those struggles have largely occurred because Europe has attempted to reduce debt and deficit levels too quickly instead of focusing on growing the economy.
The United States took a different path after the Great Recession, choosing stimulus instead, and it has so far fared better than Europe. But it is now pursuing the same austere path Europe chose, with sequestration’s automatic budget cuts threatening to damage the recovery the U.S. has already made. McConnell claimed that “spending has exploded,” but while government spending has helped lead past economic recoveries, it has plateaued in the last four years and largely failed to help this recovery.
The cuts McConnell called “modest” will likely only make that worse. The Congressional Budget Office projects that it will lead to reduced economic growth and 750,000 lost jobs, and other projections show that it may hinder growth enough to prevent actual deficit reduction. But when Crowley asked McConnell to address those projections, he refused, saying only, “We promised the American people we’d do this a year and a half ago.”

Rep. Clyburn: Scalia Doesn’t Care About the Voting Rights Act Because He’s ‘White and Proud’ | TheBlaze.com

Rep. Jim Clyburn charged that Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia has little regard for a piece of landmark civil rights legislation because he’s “white and proud.”
The longtime South Carolina Democratic congressman told the Huffington Post Friday he was “absolutely shocked” to hear the conservative justice describe to a key section of the Voting Rights Act as a “perpetuation of racial entitlement” earlier this week. The court heard argumentsabout the provision that requires the federal government to sign off on voting system changes in certain states that have a history of discrimination.

Ana Garcia-Ashley: Supreme Court Justice Scalia Should Take a Cue From Pope Benedict XVI

When you are not serving the people, it may be time to step aside. And not serving the interests of the people is exactly what Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia did Wednesday when he called a vital protection, a "perpetuation of racial entitlement." As a woman of color, leading an organization that fights for social justice every day, I was aghast.
After all, Scalia is speaking about the Voting Rights Act (VRA) which dictates that certain states and counties with a record of racial discrimination receive permission from the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) before they can change their election laws. We all know our country's civil rights history so I say this is a good law to have on the books for it promises to keep the democratic process honest and open.
At the root of it, what was Scalia trying to say, that the courts don't have jurisdiction over state's rights, that Congress can't be trusted?

Justice Sacalia: Racial Entitlements In Voter Rights Act

Why Are Some Liberals Freaking Out Over What Happened at the Supreme Court on Wednesday? We Explain | TheBlaze.com

On Wednesday, the Supreme Court heard oral arguments on a question not touched for nearly 50 years – namely, the question of whether parts of the landmark Voting Rights Act (VRA) of 1965 still stand the test of constitutionality, and specifically a section that has long plagued states’ rights advocates.
Unfortunately for liberals, who view the VRA as one of their landmark legislative achievements, the answer to that question may well be “no,” as many court analysts seem to have viewed the oral arguments in the case as either an unadulterated disaster for the government, or at least as a strong sign that a majority of the court is willing to consider striking down at least part of the act.
And to add to the Left’s consternation, Justice Antonin Scalia, known for his strongly worded opinions, attacked the motives behind reauthorizing the supposed touchstone of racial equality for being motivated by Congressional cynicism about race in an impromptu speech. Here’s Scalia’s statement from the transcript of the oral argument (emphasis added):

Theocracidal: Scalia: 'Racial Entitlement' in Voting Rights Act

Can't hardly wait for Antonin Scalia to retire or die, after the statement he made while in hearings on the Voting Rights Act the regulates to curb voter discrimination based on race/ethnic background. Scalia's comment describes the Voting Rights Act as:

Perpetuation of racial entitlement.
Perhaps we now know why conservatives have been saying there is no racism in America, They are trying to paint a picture to erode protections make racism legal. Then they well say racism is perfectly legal. Racism was wrong in 1965 and it is just as wrong today.

Protections for ethnic minorities still very import in the US today...

clerk and shoe salesman, I remember being outraged upon learning that McDonald’s Corp. had showered President Richard Nixon with campaign donations to persuade him not to raise the minimum wage. As Bloomberg News reports in this excellent piece on two McDonald’s employees – Tyree Johnson, who works in two Chicago location, and Jim Skinner, who served as chief executive officer – not much has changed. Leslie Patton reported:
Fast-food restaurants have added positions more than twice as fast as the U.S. average during the recovery that began in June 2009. The jobs created by companies including Burger King Worldwide Inc. and Yum (YUM)! Brands Inc., which owns the Pizza Hut, Taco Bell and KFC brands, are among the lowest-paid in the U.S. — except in the C suite.
The pay gap separating fast-food workers from their chief executive officers is growing at each of those companies. The disparity has doubled at McDonald’s Corp. in the last 10 years, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. At the same time, the company helped pay for lobbying against minimum-wage increases and sought to quash the kind of unionization efforts that erupted recently on the streets of Chicago and New York.
